  • The Santa Ana winds are strong, extremely dry down-slope winds that originate inland and affect coastal Southern California and northern Baja California.
  • A Chinook wind is a weather phenomenon that creates warm, dry air that blows down the eastern slopes of the Canadian Rockies. The name Chinook means “snow eater,” as the wind occurs most frequently in winter and can disrupt snowstorms and melt fallen snow.
  • A föhn or foehn is a type of dry, warm, down-slope wind that occurs in the lee (downwind side) of a mountain range. Föhn can be initiated when deep low pressures move into Europe drawing moist Mediterranean air over the Alps. Zonda wind is a regional term for the foehn wind that often occurs on the eastern slope of the Andes, in Argentina.
